Juno Soundtrack

juno

I haven’t seen the movie, but it and the soundtrack are getting a lot of praise…so I figured it would be an easy album for me to start with.

The ‘Juno’ soundtrack reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie soundtrack minus the Mark Mothersbaugh originals. The song that sold me was ‘A Well Respected Man’ by the Kinks; other artists include The Velvet Underground, Cat Power, Sonic Youth, and Kimya Dawson.

Before listening to ‘Juno’, I had never heard of Dawson or any of her songs and now, I’ve heard five. I discovered she is considered part of the “anti-folk movement”… not quite sure what that means. I do know that I heard a song where she curses GWB. *sigh*

There are a couple of songs by Belle & Sebastian; being a baseball fan, the one entitled ‘Piazza, New York Catcher’ caught my attention. Lyrics include:

San Francisco’s calling us, the Giants and Mets will play

Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?

This is a reference to the time in Piazza’s career in which his sexual orientation was questioned and he was compelled to set the story straight (ha) with the infamous “I am not gay” press conference.

The catcher hits for .318 and catches every day

The pitcher puts religion first and rests on holidays

Reference to Piazza’s batting average and failure to go to Mass? The second line has to refer to Sandy Koufax who would not pitch in a World Series game that fell on Yom Kippur.

Other good songs include Buddy Holly’s ‘Dearest’; I don’t think I’ve ever heard him sing so low. The last song ‘Anyone Else But You’ is sung by Michael Cera and Ellen Page … it’s a cute song and I especially liked it since I picture George Michael Bluth singing.

Overall: Good and simple compilation.

I hated this movie and since I am the youngest contributor to this site I think my opinion is more relevant. Why the hell was it nominated for Best Picture. Megan you should be happy you weren’t forced to see this film like I was.
