Scumbag of the Week: L!L TRAV!3SO

It may be hard to tell from the title, but this is an opportunity for me to show a more sensitive side. Last week in my hometown some little punk went and shot some other worthless punk at the local shopping center. Sure, this is no shock - it happens dozens of times a day in cities across America. While reading a local news report on the shooting and subsequent arrests I found myself feeling a little sad. One of the kids arrested is named Martin Salazar, and he has a myspace page

It was fascinating to look at a chronicle of this punk’s life, how he speaks with his friends, what he is interested in. The more I read, the more angry I became. Sure somebody is dead (most likely he deserved it for some reason) but now these two a-holes get to go to prison for a long, long time and become (to borrow a favorite line) “ice cream for freaks”. Their lives as normal human beings are over the first time they take a shower - they may never get married (to a woman) and perhaps never get that job at the tire store they always dreamed about. That is the real tragedy to me. David Duran, the 18 year old victim is sure to be remembered and mourned far in excess of his worth to society. The family is certain to airbrush his face and name on at least one truck tailgate and look for a messy memorial of plastic flowers to litter the parking lot for the next five years.

There is no point in wasting time trying to blame someone - but I would be remiss if I didn’t call out both of these guys’ parents. I am sure to be pelted with comments saying “you don’t know anything about his family. You don’t know bad it was at home” My answer is simple - I know many many people who grew up in some of the worst situations imaginable. They are also the people I admire most. I was blessed with an idyllic upbringing - two parents who would sacrifice everything they had to raise a decent man. I know most people don’t get to say that - however, I don’t care what anybody says - no child of mine would ever wear that Eazy-E shirt and if I ever saw him flash a gang sign, I would break his goddamn fingers. Do you mean to tell me that whatever household this kid was in there was someone standing there telling him “No, you cant wear that” or “No, you have to go to school or get a job” or “No, you can’t shoot somebody”?  My son wouldn’t have the guts to pull a gun on me, because he would know I am quicker than him and would shoot him if only to save society from my own demon seed.

It is so stupid, so pointless - think of the nightmare that is ahead for these guys. They asked for every bit of it - and they deserve to never be allowed to walk amongst us again. That is why I relish in the irony of looking at the hard-boiled “gangsta” on myspace, then reconciling that with the two scared little girls in this photo:

Am I the only one that thinks Myspace is a freaking eyesore?

On a semi-related note, Sheri’s cousin as a rookie on the police force shot and killed a guy who had fired on another cop and his K-9. The details are sketchy but I’ll let you know as we find out more about it.

Did that happen in Phoenix? If so, I heard it on the radio!
